For over thirty years, Tom Jenkins has been photographing sports events and personalities, chiefly for The Guardian newspaper. His career has taken him all over the world, to eight football World Cups and six summer Olympic Games; from tug-of-war in Somerset, to horse racing on ice in St Moritz. He has won over twenty major awards, including First Place, Sports Singles in the 2017 World Press Photo Contest, and has been named British Press Awards Sports Photographer of the Year five times.
As a child, Tom was obsessed with sport. His ability, however, failed to match his enthusiasm, and learning and loving photography at school encouraged him to pursue sport from behind the lens, rather than in front of it. Between 1987 and 1989, he attended the esteemed documentary photography course created and run by Magnum photographer David Hurn in Newport, Wales, before freelancing for the agency Allsport and the newspapers The Independent and The Sunday Telegraph. In 1990, he joined The Guardian under Picture Editor Eamonn McCabe, and has been there ever since, also working for The Observer from 1993.
Tom’s first book of sports photography, In The Moment, was published in June 2012, to coincide with the London Olympic Games. It was supported by a solo exhibition at Kings Place, London and Northumbria University, Newcastle. He has had photographs used for Royal Mail stamps, and – bizarrely – even featured as a question on University Challenge. He lives in London with his wife and their two children.
